Provisional patent

File a provisional patent application.

A provisional application is a lower-cost first step toward a patent. It establishes an early filing date for the invention it describes and lets you use “patent pending” while you develop your product, test customer interest, or seek funding.

It gives you up to 12 months to decide whether to pursue a full utility patent application—and prepare for that larger investment.

Before you engage: No application drafting, patentability opinion, or full assessment of the disclosure’s legal adequacy. Material gaps may require a different service before filing.

Government fees: Government filing fees are separate from the professional fee. Eligibility for any reduced fee needs review.

Drawings & optional charges:Essentials and Guided include necessary simple diagrams derived from your supplied materials. The drawing work is defined in the quote. Filing uses your prepared description and drawings. Any additional drawing or invention work is quoted before engagement.

Looking ahead

What comes next?

A provisional normally lasts 12 months. The closing information identifies your next filing deadline and who will receive patent-office correspondence. A later application and ongoing deadline monitoring require a separate agreed scope.

Service fit, conflicts, scope, and engagement are handled personally before substantive work begins.

Who writes my application?

With Filing, you provide the description and drawings and I handle the agreed filing work. With Essentials and Guided, I prepare the application from your materials, review it, and file after your approval.

Does a provisional become a patent?

No. It is not examined and does not itself become a patent. A later application is a separate stage with its own work and fees.

What does an early filing date cover?

Only subject matter adequately supported by the provisional application. Filing is not a guarantee of patent protection.

Can I change the invention during drafting?

The package covers the invention agreed before engagement and one consolidated revision. Additional inventions or substantial new work need a separate agreed quote. Ordinary underestimation of the agreed work remains my responsibility.
